An anti snap lock is a euro cylinder built to break in a controlled place so the door stays locked when it is attacked. Sam Gregory fits TS007 3 star cylinders and security handles on uPVC, composite and aluminium doors across Sheffield and Rotherham, measured to each door so nothing stands proud of the handle. Every upgrade is quoted on the phone before he sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.

Lock snapping is an attack on the cylinder rather than on the door. A standard euro cylinder has a waist at the middle, around the fixing screw, and the attack grips the part of the cylinder sticking out past the handle, snaps it at that waist, then picks the exposed cam and turns the lock.
It works because it is quick, quiet and needs no skill, and because the ordinary euro cylinder was never designed to resist it. It works best of all on a cylinder fitted too long, which is why a cylinder standing a few millimetres proud of the handle is the single clearest sign a door is worth upgrading.
It applies to uPVC, composite and aluminium doors, which is almost every modern front and back door in Sheffield. A wooden door on a mortice lock is not exposed to it, because there is no cylinder to grip.
An anti snap cylinder is designed to fail in a place that does not help the attacker, and the better ones add three more defences.
The upgrade is a part swap rather than a door job. The mechanism, the handles and the door furniture usually stay, one screw releases the cylinder, and the new one goes in at the measured length, which is why most upgrades take under an hour.
Two ratings appear on cylinders and handles sold in the United Kingdom, and they are designed to be added together.
| Rating | What it is on | What it means | Where it leaves the door |
|---|---|---|---|
| TS007 1 star | Cylinder | Basic resistance, tested on its own | Needs a 2 star handle to be secure |
| TS007 2 star | Security handle | Hardened handle that protects the cylinder | Pairs with a 1 star cylinder to reach 3 star protection |
| TS007 3 star | Cylinder | Snap, pick, drill and bump resistance in the cylinder alone | Protected without a special handle |
| Diamond approval | Cylinder | A separate attack test, often shown alongside TS007 | Usually found on the same cylinders as 3 star |
The practical choice is between one 3 star cylinder, or a 1 star cylinder behind a 2 star handle. Sam fits either, and recommends the single 3 star cylinder on most doors because it keeps the upgrade to one part and leaves the handle choice open.
Police backed guidance on door security through Secured by Design points the same way, which is that the cylinder is the component that decides whether a modern door holds.
A euro cylinder is measured from the centre of the fixing screw to each face, and the two halves are often different, which is why a cylinder is described as 35 by 45 rather than by one number.
Fitting the right size is most of the job. A cylinder more than about three millimetres proud of the handle gives the attack something to grip, so an upgrade that is the correct standard but the wrong length still leaves the door exposed. Sam measures the door with the old cylinder out, including the thickness of any handle backplate, and fits the new one flush.
Composite doors are where this goes wrong most often, because the slab is thicker than a uPVC door and the cylinder from the old door no longer fits. A composite door repair visit usually ends with a measured cylinder for exactly that reason.
A snapped cylinder, a cylinder turned in its housing or scratch marks around the keyhole all mean the door has already been tried.
After an attempt, the cylinder is replaced rather than straightened, because the internal parts have moved even where the key still turns. Sam fits a 3 star cylinder in its place, checks whether the handle was damaged and whether the mechanism took any of the force, and advises on the back door and the patio door at the same visit, because an attacker who has tried the front usually goes round.
Insurers often ask for the lock standard after a claim, and a receipt naming the cylinder standard is what they want to see.
On a recent job in Wickersley, Rotherham, Sam fitted a 3 star APECS cylinder to replace a standard euro cylinder on a uPVC door. On another in Wombwell, Barnsley, the upgrade was a full set, with security double locking handles and 3 star anti snap cylinders, and blanking handles fitted on the outside of the patio doors because they are not the main way into the house.
The pattern across the areas Sam covers is the same. Estates built in the same decade were fitted with the same basic cylinders, so one house on a street getting a snapped lock usually means every similar door nearby is running the same part.
Prime Locksmiths holds a 5.0 rating on Google from 200+ reviews, and new handles fitted well and the price given before the job are two of the points customers raise most often.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)
Book a lock upgrade
Send a photo of the lock from the outside, taken square on so the cylinder and the handle are both in frame. Sam replies with the size you need and a price. If a lock has already been attacked, call or WhatsApp him instead.
An upgrade is often part of a larger job, and each of these has its own page.
New cylinders, mortice locks and night latches after a move or a lost key.
Damaged locks, handles and doors secured again after a break in.
uPVC Door Repair and Mechanism Replacement
Gearbox repairs and full multipoint mechanisms.

The price depends on the cylinder standard, the size, the number of doors and the time of day. There is no call out fee and no VAT, and the how an upgrade is priced is explained, including the four things that move the figure.
Look at the cylinder from outside. A 3 star cylinder is usually marked with three stars or a diamond on the face, and a basic cylinder has no marking at all. Send Sam a square on photo and he will tell you.
On its own, no. A 1 star cylinder needs a 2 star security handle over it to reach the same protection as a single 3 star cylinder.
It will where the policy names TS007 3 star or an equivalent attack standard for a uPVC or composite door. Sam tells you what the lock he fits is rated to, and the receipt names it.
No. It is usually one screw and a measured swap, finished in under an hour, with the handles and the mechanism left in place.
Yes. Anti snap cylinders can be supplied keyed alike, so the front, back and garage doors run on one key, set up at the time of fitting.
Not with a 3 star cylinder, which is rated on its own. A 2 star handle is the route to take when a 1 star cylinder is already fitted and you would rather upgrade the handle.
Yes. Anything proud of the handle gives the snapping attack something to grip, so the length is corrected as part of the upgrade whatever cylinder you choose.
Yes, and the length almost always differs from a uPVC door, because the slab is thicker. The cylinder is measured on the door rather than copied from the old one.
They matter as much as the front, because an attacker who fails at the front goes round. Sam prices the other doors in the same visit, and a patio and sliding door repair can be combined with the upgrade.
No. Lock snapping is an attack on a euro cylinder, and a wooden door on a mortice lock has none. The standard that matters there is BS3621.
Yes, and the cylinder should be replaced rather than reused even if the key still turns, because the internal parts move under the force of an attack.
