A uPVC door that will not lock, will not open or has a handle that flops up and down has almost always failed inside the door edge rather than at the key. Sam Gregory repairs and replaces the multipoint mechanism, the gearbox, the handles and the cylinder on uPVC and composite doors across Sheffield and Rotherham, and he carries the common parts on the van, so most doors are working again in one visit. Every job is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.

A uPVC door locks with a multipoint mechanism, which is a steel strip running the full height of the door edge with several locking points driven by one gearbox. Lifting the handle turns the gearbox, the gearbox pushes the locking points into the frame, and turning the key then throws the deadbolt and holds everything in place. When any part of that chain fails, the door stops locking even though the key and the cylinder are fine.
Seven parts make up the mechanism, and each one fails in its own way.
Most faults are one worn part inside that list rather than a worn out door. That is why the first question on a uPVC door is which part has failed, not whether a new door is needed.
Six faults account for nearly every uPVC door call out, and each one points at a different part.
| What the door is doing | What has usually failed | What Sam does | Usual outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| The handle lifts but the key will not turn | The gearbox, with the deadbolt cam worn or broken | Strips the mechanism out, repairs the gearbox or fits a replacement cassette | One visit, door locking the same day |
| The handle flops up and down and does nothing | The gearbox springs, which have snapped | Replaces the gearbox, or the full strip if the gearbox is no longer made | One visit, with the handle firm again |
| The door only locks when it is pulled or lifted | Alignment, with the hinges dropped or the keeps out of line | Adjusts the hinges, moves the keeps and resets the compression | One visit, no new parts in most cases |
| The door will not open from inside or outside | The gearbox has failed while the door is locked | Opens the door, usually without damage, then fits a new mechanism | One visit, entry first and the repair after |
| The handle has become stiff over weeks | The mechanism is dry or binding, or the door has started to drop | Frees and lubricates the mechanism and corrects the drop | One visit, which usually prevents a full failure |
| The key turns but the door still opens | The hooks or the deadbolt are not reaching the keeps | Realigns the keeps or replaces the locking points that have worn | One visit, door secure again |
A stiff handle is the warning that matters most. The handle gets harder to lift for weeks because the mechanism is binding or the door has dropped, then the gearbox breaks under the extra force and the door jams in whichever state it was in. A stiff door looked at early is a cheap repair, and the same door left alone becomes an emergency call out.
Forcing the handle is what turns the first into the second. The gearbox is driven by small cast parts and springs, and pushing harder loads those parts rather than the door, so the usual result is a snapped spring and a door that will not open at all.
Sam repairs the gearbox where the repair will hold and replaces the strip where it will not, and the choice is made at the door rather than on the phone.
When a repair holds
A repair suits a mechanism where only the gearbox has failed, where the strip itself is straight and the hooks and rollers are sound, and where the part is still available. It costs less than a full replacement because the labour is similar and the part is smaller.
When the strip is replaced
A full multipoint replacement suits a mechanism where the strip is bent, where several locking points are worn, where the door has been forced, or where the gearbox is no longer made. Measurements matter here, because the backset, the centres and the overall length have to match, which is why Sam measures the old strip before fitting rather than ordering from the door make alone.
Where the cylinder is being changed at the same time, Sam fits a TS007 3 star cylinder, because anti snap locks fitted to a sound mechanism remove the one attack a uPVC door is most exposed to. The price depends on the time of day, the lock standard, the door type and whether the part can be repaired, so Sam gives you the price on the phone before he sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT added.
Composite doors use the same kind of multipoint mechanism as uPVC doors, so the faults read the same way, but the door behaves differently. The slab is heavier, so it drops on its hinges sooner, catches on the frame and needs the handle lifted hard before the key will turn. The slab is also thicker, so the cylinder has to be the right length or it stands proud of the handle and becomes the easiest part of the door to attack.
Handles are the other half of this work. A uPVC door handle fails when the spring inside goes, when the spindle wears or when the fixing screws pull through, and the handle then droops, feels loose or will not return to level. Sam replaces handles in matching pairs, in white, chrome, black and gold, and fits security handles with hardened plates where the cylinder is being upgraded at the same time.
Replacing a handle is a short job when the mechanism underneath is sound. When the handle has been flopping for a while, the gearbox is usually damaged as well, because every forced lift has been loading it, so Sam checks the mechanism before fitting a new handle rather than after.
Most uPVC door repairs are finished in one visit on the same day.
A mechanism that is no longer made is the one job that can need a second visit, because the strip has to be ordered to the measurements. There is no second call out fee when that happens.
Most uPVC door work comes from Sheffield and Rotherham, and the door populations differ across the two. The newer estates in Mosborough, Killamarsh, Chapeltown and Dinnington are almost all uPVC and composite doors on multipoint mechanisms, while the older terraces in Hillsborough, Walkley and Crookes mix uPVC back doors with wooden front doors on mortice locks.
On a recent job in Rotherham, Sam replaced a complete multipoint mechanism where the gearbox and two locking points had worn together. On another in Hoyland, Barnsley, the gearbox alone had failed and the replacement went in beside the old part the same morning. On a job in S5, Sheffield, the door was locked shut with a failed mechanism, so Sam opened it without damage first and fitted the new strip after.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

A uPVC door repair is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT added, and the figure varies with the time of day, the part that has failed and whether it can be repaired. A gearbox repair costs less than a full multipoint replacement, and the what decides a repair price is explained, including the four things that move the figure. Sam gives you the price on the phone before he sets off.
It can almost always be repaired. The part that has failed is usually the gearbox inside the multipoint mechanism, and replacing that part or the strip costs a fraction of a new door. A door only needs replacing when the frame or the slab itself is damaged.
Six faults cover nearly all of them, which are a gearbox that will not let the key turn, snapped gearbox springs that leave the handle floppy, a dropped door that only locks when it is lifted, a mechanism that has failed while the door is locked, a handle that has become stiff over weeks, and locking points that no longer reach the keeps.
Between 10 and 15 years in normal use. A door that is slammed, forced or left out of line wears its gearbox faster, and a door that is adjusted when it first starts to stick usually reaches the upper end of that range.
The usual cause is that the door has dropped or the keeps have moved, so the hooks and rollers no longer line up with the frame. The next most likely cause is a failed gearbox. Both are repairs, and a uPVC door that will not lock is fixed in one visit in most cases.
The gearbox. The part of it that drives the deadbolt has worn or broken, so the handle still moves the hooks but the key has nothing left to turn. The mechanism comes out and the gearbox is repaired or replaced.
Yes. Sam opens most jammed uPVC doors without damage, then fits the new mechanism afterwards. Drilling the cylinder is the last resort and the cylinder is replaced as part of the job when it is needed.
Yes. Composite doors use the same multipoint mechanisms, so the same repairs apply, with hinge adjustment and the correct cylinder length doing more of the work because the slab is heavier and thicker.
Yes. Handles are replaced in matching pairs in white, chrome, black and gold. Sam checks the mechanism first, because a handle that has been flopping usually means the gearbox has been taking the strain too.
In most cases, yes, because Sam carries the common gearboxes, mechanisms, handles and cylinders on the van. A mechanism that is no longer made has to be ordered to measurements, and there is no second call out fee when that happens.
Yes. Window mechanisms fail the same way as door mechanisms, and uPVC window lock and handle repair covers handles, locks and windows that are stuck shut.
Yes. Every repair carries a 12 month parts and labour warranty, and Sam returns with no call out fee if anything needs putting right.
No. Forcing the handle loads the small cast parts and springs inside the gearbox, which is what turns a stiff door into a door that will not open at all. Leave it and call.
Sam covers Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Dronfield and Worksop, and reaches them within 30 minutes or less unless he is already on a job. Doncaster is not covered.
