A uPVC window that will not lock, will not open or spins its handle has failed in the locking gear inside the frame rather than in the glass. Sam Gregory repairs and replaces window handles, espagnolette mechanisms and friction stay hinges across Sheffield and Rotherham, and he opens windows that are stuck shut without breaking the unit. Every job is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.

A uPVC window locks with an espagnolette, which is a long bar running inside the opening sash with cams or mushrooms along it. Turning the handle slides the bar, the cams rotate behind keeps fixed to the frame, and the sash is pulled tight onto its seals. Four parts carry the whole job.
The glass and the frame are rarely the problem. A window that has misted between the panes is a glazing job rather than a locksmith job, and Sam says so on the phone rather than coming out to look at it.
Six faults cover nearly every window call, and the handle tells you most of what you need to know.
| What the window is doing | What has usually failed | What Sam does |
|---|---|---|
| The handle spins without locking | The spindle or the handle gearbox has worn out | Replaces the handle and checks the bar still slides freely |
| The handle will not turn at all | The cams are jammed against the keeps, often after the sash has dropped | Frees the gear, realigns the keeps and adjusts the hinges |
| The window will not open | The espagnolette has seized, or the sash has swollen onto the seal | Opens the sash without damage, then replaces the mechanism |
| The window closes but will not lock | A keep out of line or a worn cam | Moves the keeps and replaces any cam that no longer grips |
| The window drops or scrapes when opened | The friction stay hinges have worn or bent | Fits new stays in the matching size and resets the sash square |
| The keyed handle will not unlock | The key is lost, or the barrel inside the handle has failed | Replaces the handle, with a key or without, as you prefer |
A handle that has started to feel loose is the early warning. The spindle rounds off gradually, and once it slips completely the window can be left locked shut with no way to turn the gear, which is a longer and more expensive visit than replacing the handle while it still works.
A window stuck shut is opened through the mechanism rather than through the glass.
Sam works on the espagnolette from the edge of the sash, releasing the cams that have jammed, and on a window that has to come apart he takes the sash out of the frame so the mechanism can be replaced from the inside. That is what a recent job in Chapeltown needed, where a failed mechanism had locked the sash shut and the sash had to come out before the new gear went in.
Breaking the unit is a last resort and it is almost never necessary. A sealed glass unit costs more than the repair, and a fire escape window that no longer opens is worth fixing quickly for a reason beyond cost, because an upstairs bedroom window is a way out.
Window handles come in a few families, and the one on your window decides what fits.
Friction stay hinges are sized by the length of the arm and by whether the window is top hung or side hung, and fire escape stays open wider than standard ones. Sam carries the common sizes and finishes, which are white, chrome, black and gold, so most window jobs finish in one visit.
A window that will not lock is both a security problem and an insurance problem. Most policies expect windows to be locked when the house is empty, and a window that only pushes shut is not locked.
Ground floor and flat roof windows are the ones to fix first, because they are reachable, and a window beside a drainpipe or a garage roof counts as reachable too. Upstairs windows matter in the other direction, because a stay that has failed open is a window a child can push further than it should go, and a restrictor is a ten minute fit that solves it.
The same gear turns up on doors, so a house with failing window handles usually has a door mechanism of the same age and the same make. Sam checks the doors while he is there, and a uPVC door repair booked in the same visit costs less than two separate call outs.
Window work follows the housing. The 1980s and 1990s estates across Mosborough, Killamarsh, Chapeltown and the newer parts of Rotherham are on their second or third generation of handles and stays by now, while the Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Hillsborough, Walkley and Crookes were retrofitted with uPVC at every possible date, so the gear inside two windows on the same street is often from different decades.
That is why Sam measures the part rather than ordering by the window make, and why a photograph of the handle and the edge of the sash answers most questions before he arrives.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

The price depends on the part, the number of windows and the time of day. A handle costs less than a full mechanism, and the how a window repair is priced is explained, including the four things that move the figure. There is no call out fee and no VAT.
A keep out of line or a worn cam on the espagnolette bar. The handle is doing its job and the bar is moving, but the cams are no longer gripping the frame, which is an adjustment or a part rather than a new window.
Almost never. The locking gear inside the sash is a replaceable part, and the frame and the glass are usually sound. A new window is a glazing decision, not a lock one.
Yes. Sam releases the jammed cams from the edge of the sash and takes the sash out of the frame where the mechanism has to be replaced. The glass stays in one piece.
Yes. Handles are matched by type, spindle length and finish, and Sam carries the common espag and cockspur handles in white, chrome, black and gold.
The friction stay hinges have worn or bent. New stays in the matching length bring the sash back square, which usually fixes the locking at the same time.
Yes. Keyed handles suit ground floor windows and homes with children, and they are fitted in the same visit as any other handle.
It can be. Most policies expect windows to be locked when the house is empty, and a window that only pushes shut is not locked, so it is worth fixing before it is tested.
Yes. A restrictor limits how far the sash opens and is a short job, which matters most on bedroom windows where a stay has failed open.
No. A misted unit is glazing work rather than lock work, so a glazier is the right call. Sam says so on the phone rather than charging for a visit.
Yes. Tilt and turn gear uses a longer mechanism and needs setting so the sash tilts and swings in the right order, which is part of the repair rather than an extra.
Yes, and it usually saves money. The gear in the doors is often the same age as the windows, and a why a uPVC door stops locking fails in the same way as the window gear.
