A bifold door that will not fold, will not lock or drags on the floor has nearly always lost its alignment or failed in the locking gear of the master door. Sam Gregory repairs bifold door locks across Sheffield and Rotherham, replacing shoot bolts, handles, cylinders and mechanisms, and resetting leaves that have dropped out of line. Every job is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.
A bifold set is a row of leaves hinged to each other, running on a track at the top, at the bottom or both, and only one of those leaves carries a lock.
Everything about a bifold fault follows from that layout. If the master door locks but the set feels loose, look at the shoot bolts. If the master door will not lock at all, look at the mechanism and the alignment of the leaf it closes against.
Five faults cover nearly every bifold call out.
| What the doors are doing | What has usually failed | What Sam does |
|---|---|---|
| The master door will not lock | The leaf has dropped, so the hooks miss the keeps | Adjusts the hinges and the keeps, then tests the full throw |
| The set will not fold back flat | Leaves out of line, or a track holding grit | Clears and levels the track, resets the leaf gaps |
| A slave leaf swings loose when shut | A shoot bolt no longer dropping or rising fully | Replaces or frees the shoot bolt and sets the floor and head sockets |
| The handle turns with no resistance | The spindle or the gearbox in the master door has worn | Replaces the handle, or the mechanism where the gearbox has gone |
| Leaves catch each other as they fold | Hinge wear or a hinge screw pulling out of the frame | Repacks and refits the hinge, then resets the gaps across the set |
A bifold that has started to need a shove is telling you the alignment has gone. The faster that is corrected, the less likely it is that a hinge screw tears out of the frame, which is a longer repair than any lock.
Shoot bolts are the part that fails most on a bifold set, because they live where the dirt is. The bottom bolt drops into a socket in the threshold, which fills with grit, leaves and rain, and the bolt then stops travelling its full length long before it stops moving altogether.
Handles on the master door take the same punishment as any door handle, and the spindle rounds off first. Bifold handles are usually slimmer than standard door handles because the leaf is narrow, so the handle is matched by backplate size as well as by spindle length.
The cylinder in the master door is a standard euro cylinder, which means it is exposed to the same snapping attack as a front door, and a bifold set usually faces a garden rather than a street. Where the cylinder is being changed anyway, fitting a TS007 3 star cylinder costs the difference in the part and closes the gap.
Sam repairs the locking gear and the alignment of a bifold set, which is what nearly every call is about.
That covers the master door mechanism, the gearbox, handles, cylinders, shoot bolts, hinge adjustment, keeps, thresholds and the settings that make the leaves fold and lock as they should. A glass unit that has misted or cracked, a frame that has been damaged, and a full track replacement on a large set are a glazing or installation job, and Sam says so on the phone rather than taking the call out.
That boundary keeps the visit honest. Most bifold sets that feel finished are running on worn shoot bolts and lost alignment, and the whole fix is an afternoon of adjustment and two parts, not a new set of doors. When the doors next to it are the problem instead, a patio and sliding door repair is usually the job that was actually needed.
Bifold sets arrived with the extension and conservatory boom, so they cluster on the newer estates and on the back of older houses that have been extended. Mosborough, Killamarsh, Dinnington and the newer parts of Rotherham have the highest concentration, and most sets Sam sees are between five and fifteen years old, which is when shoot bolts and hinges reach the end of their easy life.
Aluminium bifolds and uPVC bifolds fail in the same places, and the parts are matched by measurement rather than by the make, so the brand of the door rarely decides whether it can be repaired.
Prime Locksmiths holds a 5.0 rating on Google from 200+ reviews, and front door repairs and the price given before the job are two of the points customers raise most often.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

The price depends on the part, the number of leaves and the time of day. An adjustment costs less than a mechanism, and the how a bifold repair is priced is explained, including the four things that move the figure.
The leaves have dropped out of line, or the track is holding grit so the runners cannot move freely. Both are adjustment jobs rather than new doors.
The leaf has usually dropped, so the hooks no longer reach the keeps, or the gearbox behind the handle has failed. Sam checks the alignment first because it is the cheaper of the two.
No. A slave leaf is held by shoot bolts top and bottom, and one of them has stopped travelling into its socket. The socket is usually full of grit.
Yes. The master door takes a standard euro cylinder, so a TS007 3 star cylinder fits, and it matters because a bifold set usually faces a garden rather than a street. TS007 3 star cylinders are fitted in the same visit.
Yes. Aluminium and uPVC bifolds use the same kind of locking gear, and parts are matched by measurement rather than by the make of the door.
Yes. Bifold handles are slimmer than standard door handles, so they are matched by backplate size and spindle length as well as by finish.
No. A full track replacement on a large set and any glass work are installation and glazing jobs. Sam says so on the phone rather than charging for a visit.
Yes, in most cases without damage, by releasing the mechanism from the edge of the master door. The repair follows once the set is open.
Most are finished in one visit. An alignment takes under an hour, and shoot bolts or a mechanism take longer because the leaf has to be worked on in place.
Not because of the locks. Shoot bolts, hinges, handles and mechanisms are all replaceable, and a set that is adjusted when it starts to drag lasts far longer than one that is forced.
Yes. Sam works for landlords and letting agents across Sheffield and Rotherham and invoices the landlord or the agent rather than the tenant.
