If you are locked out in Sheffield, call Sam on 07842 685254 and he will tell you the price and the arrival time on that call. Sam answers the phone himself 24 hours a day, opens most doors without damage by picking the lock rather than drilling it, and carries cylinders, mechanisms and handles on the van so the door locks again before he leaves. Sam gives you the price on the call before he sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.

An emergency is a door you cannot get through, or a door that will not secure. Five situations make up almost every emergency call Sam takes.
A key locked in the car, a safe that will not open and a window that will not shut are different jobs. Sam works on homes and business premises, and he does not board up broken glass, which is glazing work.
Four things make the visit faster and cheaper, and one thing makes it worse.
The thing that makes it worse is breaking a window. One recent customer had already smashed a window to reach a spare key that turned out not to be on the hook, then called Sam, who opened the front door by picking the lock in minutes. The lockout cost what it was always going to cost, and the window cost a glazier on top.
Non destructive entry means opening the door using the lock itself rather than destroying it, and it is what Sam tries first on every lockout.
On a euro cylinder, which is the lock on most uPVC and composite doors, that usually means picking the cylinder so the key still works afterwards. On a night latch, the sort fitted to wooden front doors, entry is often made through the latch itself. On a mortice lock, picking is slower and sometimes a curtain pick or a letterbox tool is the better route. A snapped key is extracted with key extractors before the cylinder is tested again.
Drilling is the last resort, not the first move, and it is only used where the lock cannot be picked, where it has already failed mechanically or where the door is jammed by a broken mechanism. When a cylinder is drilled, a new one is fitted as part of the job, and when the keys are gone for good a full lock change in the same visit is usually the sensible answer.
The lock on the door decides how the entry is made and how long it takes, far more than the make of the door.
| Lock on the door | Where you find it | How Sam opens it | Does the key still work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Euro cylinder | Most uPVC and composite doors, with a handle | Picked, or bypassed through the mechanism | Yes, unless the cylinder had to be drilled |
| Night latch | Wooden front doors, the lock that slams behind you | Opened through the latch, often in minutes | Yes |
| Mortice lock | Wooden doors, a separate key below the handle | Picked or curtain picked, slower than a cylinder | Yes |
| Snapped key in the cylinder | Any lock, after a worn key is forced | Extracted with key extractors, then the cylinder is tested | A new key is cut or the cylinder is replaced |
| Jammed multipoint mechanism | uPVC and composite doors locked shut | Opened through the failed gearbox, then the mechanism is replaced | Yes, with the new mechanism |
| Garage up and over lock | Detached and integral garages | Opened and the lock replaced where it has seized | A new key comes with the new lock |
Picking a euro cylinder is usually the fastest entry and the one that leaves the lock working. A jammed mechanism is the slowest, because the door has to be opened before the real repair can even start.
A lost key and a stolen key are different problems. A key lost somewhere in the house is an entry job. A key stolen, or lost with anything showing the address, is a security job, because whoever has it can walk in.
Where the keys are gone for good, Sam changes the cylinder in the same visit so the old keys stop working, and he cuts the number of new keys you actually need. On a uPVC or composite door that means a new euro cylinder, usually anti snap, and on a wooden door it means a new mortice lock or night latch. Insurers generally expect this to be done promptly after a theft, and a locksmith receipt is what they ask for.
A lockout is quoted on the call, and the figure covers the travel, the labour and the entry.
The price depends on the time of day, the lock standard, the door type and whether a part has to be replaced. A late night call out costs a little more than the same job in the day, Saturday and Sunday cost the same as a weekday, and there is no call out fee at any hour, even when Sam has to come back a second time.
Sam gives you the full price on the phone before he sets off, so the figure you agree on the call is the figure you pay at the door. If he cannot open it, you pay nothing.
Sam reaches every area he covers within 30 minutes or less, unless he is already on a job, in which case he tells you the longer time when you call. He travels up to 45 minutes for a job.
He answers the phone 24 hours a day and comes out late at night for lockouts in and close to Sheffield. Work that is not an emergency and comes in late at night is booked for the next day instead, which is the honest version of a 24 hour service from one locksmith rather than a call centre with a rota.
Lockouts come from every part of the city, and the door makes more difference than the district. Older terraces in Hillsborough, Walkley and Crookes are mostly wooden doors on night latches and mortice locks, which lock behind you in a gust of wind. Newer estates in Mosborough, Killamarsh, Chapeltown and Dinnington are uPVC and composite doors on multipoint mechanisms, where the usual emergency is a door jammed shut by a failed gearbox rather than a key left inside.
On a recent job in S5, Sam opened a locked front door without damage and repaired the failed gearbox in the same visit, so the owner was back inside and secure without a second appointment.

Amazing, honest, speedy service, a rarity to find someone trustworthy nowadays but Sam was friendly, honest, up front about costs and repairs went out of his way and beyond to help and give advice. I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

In most cases, yes. Sam picks the lock or uses entry tools first, and drilling is the last resort, used only where the lock cannot be picked or has already failed.
Only if the cylinder had to be drilled or the keys are lost for good. A picked lock still works with the original key, so no new lock is needed.
Yes. Sam extracts the broken part with key extractors, then tests the cylinder. If the snap was caused by a worn cylinder, he replaces it there and then.
A bill or bank statement with the address, a tenancy agreement, or photo ID with the address. If your documents are inside, Sam checks them as soon as the door is open.
Sam answers the phone 24 hours a day and comes out late at night for lockouts in and close to Sheffield. Jobs that are not urgent and come in late at night are booked for the next day.
Yes. A door jammed shut is usually a failed gearbox inside the mechanism. Sam opens the door first, then repairs or replaces the mechanism, and a uPVC door faults is the same fault caught earlier.
No. A window costs more than the lockout and is rarely necessary, because most doors open without damage. Call first and let Sam tell you what the entry will cost.
