Sam is an independent locksmith who works on homes across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield and Worksop. He covers ten kinds of domestic lock work, from a door that has shut behind you to a mechanism that has worn out after twenty years, and he does every job himself. Each one is quoted on the phone before he sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT to add.

Domestic lock work divides into ten jobs, and almost every call is one of them. The table names each one, the thing that usually brings the call, and whether it is normally a repair or a replacement.
| Job | What brings the call | Repair or replace |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency lockout | A key lost, snapped or left inside a door that has shut | Open first, replace only if the lock has failed |
| uPVC door mechanism | The handle lifts but the key will not turn | Replace the mechanism, keep the door |
| Composite door repair | The door catches on the frame and needs a shove | Adjust the hinges, rarely a new part |
| Lock change | A move, a split, a tenancy ending or a missing key | Replace the cylinder, keep the mechanism |
| Anti snap upgrade | An attempt nearby, or an insurer asking for a standard | Replace the cylinder and often the handle |
| Window lock repair | A handle that spins or a window that will not lock | Repair or replace the mechanism, keep the window |
| Patio and sliding door | The door will not lock or the handle does nothing | Repair the gearbox or the hook lock |
| Bifold door repair | The leaves will not line up or the lock will not engage | Adjust and repair, replace parts if worn |
| Garage door lock | The barrel has seized or the handle has snapped | Replace the lock, keep the door |
| Burglary repair | A forced door or frame after a break in | Make secure first, repair properly after |
The pattern across all ten is the same. A failed part is replaced and the door is kept, because a door that has dropped or a mechanism that has worn does not mean the door is finished. The most common of the ten by a distance is the uPVC mechanism, which is set out in full on the uPVC door mechanism repair in Sheffield page.
Five kinds of work fall outside what Sam does, and saying so here saves a wasted call.
Commercial work is taken on within limits, which means aluminium shopfront doors, cylinder changes and lock repairs rather than whole building systems. Those limits are spelled out in full rather than left vague, because a shop owner ringing about an access control system should not have to find out at the door.
Every job follows the same five steps, whichever of the ten it is.
The step that matters most is the third one. A price agreed on the phone and then changed on the doorstep is the complaint people have about locksmiths, so if what Sam finds is different from what you described, he says so before he touches anything and you can stop there without owing him anything.
A door that will not lock is usually a worn part rather than a worn door, and the difference is worth understanding before anybody quotes you for a replacement. Three things fail far more often than the door itself.
All three are replaceable parts and none of them means a new door. Sam repairs a failed gearbox rather than replacing the whole mechanism where the part allows it, including on sliding doors, which is cheaper than the full strip and is the job most people are never offered.

Amazing, honest, speedy service, a rarity to find someone trustworthy nowadays but Sam was friendly, honest, up front about costs and repairs went out of his way and beyond to help and give advice. And on top of that did an excellent job. I would 100% recommend Prime Locksmiths to anyone. If you're looking for a skilled, down to earth, knowledgeable, trustworthy locksmith and want to support a local business then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company.Posted on Google![]()

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

Door and window locks on homes, which covers opening them, repairing them, replacing them and upgrading them. It does not cover vehicles, safes or glazing. The ten jobs in the table above are the whole of it.
Within 30 minutes or less across the areas covered, unless Sam is already on a job. He works alone, so when that happens he tells you how long he will actually be rather than quoting a time he cannot keep.
It depends on the job, the parts, the door and the time of day. Sam gives the figure on the phone before he sets off and that figure is what you pay, with no call out fee and no VAT. What moves the number is set out on the how a locksmith job is priced page.
No, and that includes a second visit if a part has to be ordered. The travel is inside the job price rather than added to it.
No. Prime Locksmiths is not VAT registered, so the figure quoted is the figure paid. A business only charges VAT once its turnover passes the registration threshold.
Almost never. A door that will not lock is usually a worn mechanism, a failed gearbox or a loose handle, and all three are replaceable parts. Sam says which it is before any work starts.
In most cases, yes. A lock that is simply locked can usually be opened without damage and left working afterwards. A lock that has already broken inside, or one that has been attacked, often has to be replaced.
Yes, where the policy names a standard and the door can take it. Wooden doors are usually asked for a BS3621 mortice lock and uPVC or composite doors for a cylinder rated TS007 3 star or Sold Secure Diamond. Tested products are listed by Secured by Design.
Yes, regularly. Locks changed between tenancies, keys cut to the number the agent and tenant need, and an invoice afterwards rather than payment at the door.
You pay nothing. There is no fix and no fee, and no call out charge even on a return visit.
Yes. High security key safes set into the wall beside the door, which suit carers, cleaners and family who need access without carrying a key.
The gearbox inside the multipoint mechanism has failed, which is the single most common call Sam gets. The full explanation, including the warning signs that come first, is on the why a uPVC door stops locking page.
Sam, every time, in one signwritten van. He does not subcontract work out. His background is on the how Sam works page.
Yes, within limits. Aluminium shopfront doors, cylinder changes and lock repairs are all covered, and the boundary is set out on the commercial lock and door repairs page. Master key suites, access control and panic bars are outside it.
Yes. Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Oughtibridge and Bolsterstone are all covered, and the valley is set out on the Stocksbridge locksmith page.
