A composite door that sticks, drops or needs the handle lifted hard before the key will turn is almost always out of adjustment rather than worn out. Sam Gregory repairs composite doors across Sheffield and Rotherham, resetting hinges and keeps, repairing or replacing the multipoint mechanism and gearbox, and fitting euro cylinders cut to the right length for the thicker slab. Every job is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.
A composite door has a solid timber or foam core under a moulded glass reinforced plastic skin, so it weighs far more than a hollow uPVC door of the same size. That weight changes how it fails.
The practical result is that a composite door is usually fixed with adjustment and a correctly sized part, not with a new door. Any quote for a replacement slab should be the last answer, not the first.
Six faults cover nearly every composite door call out.
| What the door is doing | What has usually happened | What Sam does |
|---|---|---|
| The handle has to be lifted hard to lock | The slab has dropped, so the hooks no longer meet the keeps | Adjusts the hinges and moves the keeps, then resets the compression |
| The door catches on the frame or the threshold | The same drop, far enough to touch | Lifts the door on the hinges and checks the gap along all four edges |
| The handle lifts but the key will not turn | The gearbox has worn or broken inside the mechanism | Repairs the gearbox or fits a replacement mechanism measured to the old strip |
| The cylinder sticks out past the handle | A cylinder of the wrong length was fitted | Measures the door and fits a cylinder flush to the handle, usually anti snap |
| Cold draughts along one edge | Compression has been lost as the door settled | Adjusts the keeps and the hinge cams to pull the door back onto its seals |
| The door only started sticking this season | Seasonal movement in the slab and the frame | Adjusts for the season and shows you which hinge to turn if it moves back |
The fault to catch early is the hard lift. Every forced lift loads the gearbox, and a gearbox that has been forced for weeks breaks while the door is locked, which turns a 20 minute adjustment into an emergency entry and a new mechanism.
A euro cylinder has to match the thickness of the door, measured from the fixing screw to each face, and on a composite door that measurement is rarely the same as the uPVC door it replaced.
A cylinder that is too long is the single most common security fault Sam finds on composite doors. Anything standing more than about three millimetres proud of the handle gives an attacker something to grip, and lock snapping starts with grip. A cylinder that is too short is just as bad in the other direction, because the cam sits badly and the key drags.
Sam measures the door rather than ordering from the door make, fits the cylinder flush, and where the lock is being changed anyway he fits a TS007 3 star cylinder, so anti snap locks and the correct length are sorted in one visit. The price depends on the time of day, the cylinder standard and whether the mechanism needs work as well.
Composite door hinges adjust in three directions, which is why a door that has dropped can usually be brought back without touching the lock. The flag hinges fitted to most composite doors move the slab up and down, in and out for compression, and side to side for the gap on the lock edge. Each one has to be moved a small amount at a time and checked, because over correcting on one hinge drags the door out of square.
Handles fail from the inside out. The spring that returns the handle to level goes first, then the spindle wears and the handle feels loose, then the fixing screws pull in the slab. Sam replaces handles in matching pairs and fits security handles with hardened plates where the cylinder is being upgraded at the same time.
Letter plates, hinge caps, cylinder guards and door restrictors are the small parts that go after them, and most are carried on the van. A new build door still inside its installer warranty is the one exception, because fitting a part to it yourself can end the warranty. Sam says so when he sees one rather than fitting first and leaving you to find out.
Most composite door repairs are finished in one visit on the same day.
Composite doors are concentrated on the newer estates, which is where most of this work comes from. Mosborough, Killamarsh, Chapeltown, Dinnington and the newer parts of Rotherham are mostly composite and uPVC on multipoint mechanisms, while the Victorian terraces closer to the centre still run wooden doors on mortice locks and night latches.
Estate doors of the same age tend to fail together, because they were hung on the same day by the same fitters, so a neighbour with a sticking door is a good sign of what yours is about to do.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

The price depends on the time of day, the parts needed and whether the fault is adjustment or a failed mechanism. An adjustment costs less than a new mechanism, and the how a door repair is priced is explained, including the four things that move the figure.
It can almost always be repaired. The fault is usually hinge adjustment, a keep out of line, a worn gearbox or a cylinder of the wrong length, and all four cost a fraction of a new door.
The slab has dropped on its hinges, so the hooks no longer line up with the keeps and you are forcing them into place. It is an adjustment, and it should be done before the gearbox breaks under the strain.
Composite doors swell a little in long wet spells and the frame moves with the weather too. Sam adjusts for the season and shows you which hinge to turn if it moves back the other way.
Yes. Flag hinges adjust up and down, in and out for compression, and side to side. Sam moves each one a small amount and checks the gap along every edge, because over correcting one hinge pulls the door out of square.
Yes, and it is the most common security fault on composite doors. Anything proud of the handle gives an attacker something to grip. Sam measures the door and fits a cylinder flush to the handle.
They use the same style of multipoint mechanism and the same euro cylinder, but usually a different cylinder length, because a composite slab is thicker. A uPVC door that will not lock fails in the same way.
Yes, where the strip is straight and the part is still made. Sam decides at the door, because a repair that will not hold costs more in the end than a replacement.
It can, if the door is still inside the installer warranty. Sam tells you when he sees one so you can go back to the installer first, rather than finding out afterwards.
Yes. Handles are replaced in matching pairs, and Sam checks the mechanism at the same time, because a handle that has been loose usually means the gearbox has been taking the strain.
Yes. A TS007 3 star cylinder cut to the right length is the single best upgrade on a composite door, because the cylinder is the part most exposed to attack.
Most are finished in one visit the same day. An adjustment takes under an hour, and a full mechanism replacement takes longer because the strip has to come out of the door edge.
