A patio door that will not lock, drags along the track or has a handle that moves without doing anything has failed in the gear inside the door rather than in the glass. Sam Gregory repairs sliding patio doors and French doors across Sheffield and Rotherham, replacing gearboxes, hook locks, rollers, shoot bolts and handles, and realigning doors that have dropped. Every job is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.

Two kinds of door get called patio doors, and they fail in completely different ways, so the first question on the phone is which one you have.
That difference decides everything that follows. A sliding door that has become hard to move is almost always a roller problem that has started to break the lock, while a French door that will not lock is almost always an alignment or a shoot bolt problem.
Six faults cover nearly every patio and sliding door call out.
| What the door is doing | Door type | What has usually failed | What Sam does |
|---|---|---|---|
| The handle moves but the hooks do not come out | Sliding | The patio gearbox behind the handle | Replaces the gearbox, matched to the hook spacing |
| The door slides hard or scrapes the track | Sliding | Worn or seized rollers, or a track full of grit | Replaces the rollers, clears and levels the track |
| The hooks come out but will not reach the keep | Sliding | The door has dropped on worn rollers | Lifts the door on the roller adjusters and resets the keep |
| The second leaf will not stay shut | French | Failed or bent shoot bolts top and bottom | Replaces the shoot bolts and adjusts the keeps in the frame and the threshold |
| The active leaf needs forcing to lock | French | The leaf has dropped on its hinges | Adjusts the hinges and the keeps so the door closes under its own weight |
| The key turns but the door still opens | Both | Worn hooks or a mechanism that is no longer engaging | Replaces the locking points and tests the full travel |
Draughts along the lock edge belong on the same list. A sliding door that has dropped or a French door that has lost compression no longer pulls onto its seals, so the cold comes in at the same time as the lock stops reaching, and both are fixed by the same adjustment.
The fault worth catching early is the heavy slide. A sliding door running on dead rollers is being dragged rather than rolled, and the gearbox takes that strain every time the handle is lifted, so the lock usually fails a few months after the rollers do.
A sliding patio door can weigh over 80 kilograms with its glass, and the whole weight sits on two or four small rollers running in a track.
Rollers wear flat, seize on their bearings or collect grit from the garden, and the door then drags on the track rather than rolling along it. The first sign is usually a door that needs a shove to start moving, the second is a scraping sound, and the third is a lock that will not reach its keep because the whole leaf is sitting lower than it was.
Replacing rollers means lifting the sliding leaf out of the track, which is a two person job on a large door and the reason it is worth doing before the gearbox goes as well. New rollers are height adjustable, so the door is set back to level as part of the fit and the hooks line up with the keep again.
The lock on a sliding patio door is a hook lock, and the hooks are driven by a gearbox that sits behind the handle inside the leading edge.
Patio gearboxes are sized by the spacing between the hooks and by the backset, and there are several incompatible families, which is why Sam measures the old unit rather than ordering from the door make. Where the part is no longer made, a universal hook lock of the same spacing is fitted instead of replacing the door.
Patio handles come in inline and offset patterns and in keyed and non keyed versions, and most take a euro cylinder. Where the cylinder is being changed anyway, fitting 3 star anti snap cylinders to the patio door matters as much as on the front door, because a patio door is out of sight from the street and gives an attacker time.
Patio doors are the back of the house, which is where most attempts happen, and they have two weaknesses a front door does not.
The first is lifting. An older sliding door with worn rollers can sometimes be lifted far enough in its track to come out of the frame, which anti lift blocks and correctly adjusted rollers prevent. The second is the handle, because a patio handle with an exposed cylinder is open to the same snapping attack as a front door, and nobody is watching the garden.
On a recent job in Wombwell, Barnsley, Sam fitted security double locking handles and 3 star anti snap cylinders to a set of doors, with blanking handles on the outside of the patio doors because they are not the main way into the house, which removes the outside grip completely.
On a recent job in Maltby, Rotherham, Sam repaired the gearbox on a sliding patio door that had stopped throwing its hooks, so the family could lock the back of the house that night rather than waiting on a new door quote.
Sliding patio doors are concentrated on the 1970s and 1980s estates across Sheffield and Rotherham, where many are still on their original aluminium or early uPVC frames, while French doors are the common choice on the newer estates and on extensions, which is why both turn up in the same week.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

Tell him whether the door slides or opens outwards, what the handle does and whether it still locks. A photo of the handle and the lock edge helps. If the door will not lock tonight, call or WhatsApp him instead.

The price depends on the part, the door type and the time of day. Rollers and a gearbox cost more than a handle, and the how a patio repair is priced is explained, including the four things that move the figure. There is no call out fee and no VAT.
It can almost always be repaired. Rollers, gearboxes, hook locks and handles are all replaceable parts, and the frame and the glass are usually sound.
The rollers have worn flat or seized, so the door is being dragged along the track instead of rolling. New height adjustable rollers fix the weight and usually fix the locking at the same time.
The gearbox behind the handle has failed, so the hooks are no longer being driven out of the door edge. It is replaced as a unit, matched to the hook spacing.
Yes. The shoot bolts at the top and bottom of the passive leaf have usually failed or bent, and they are replaced and realigned with the keeps in the frame and the threshold.
An older sliding door with worn rollers sometimes can, which is why rollers are adjusted correctly and anti lift blocks are fitted as part of a repair.
Yes, and the patio door deserves it as much as the front, because it faces the garden where nobody is watching. Blanking handles are an option where the door is never used from outside.
Most are finished in one visit. A gearbox or a handle takes under an hour, and a roller replacement takes longer because the sliding leaf has to come out of the track.
Yes. Older aluminium sliding doors use the same hook locks and rollers, and parts are matched by measurement rather than by the door make.
In most cases, yes. Sam carries patio gearboxes, hook locks and handles on the van, and a roller set is ordered to size when it is not a common pattern.
No. The glass stays in the frame for a lock, handle or gearbox repair, and it is only disturbed where a whole leaf has to be lifted out to reach the rollers.
Glass is a glazing job rather than a lock job, so Sam does not quote for it. He repairs the locks, rollers, gearboxes and alignment, and a glazier prices the unit itself.
Yes. Sam works for landlords and letting agents across Sheffield and Rotherham, and the work is invoiced to the landlord or the agent rather than the tenant.
