A garage lock that will not turn, spins without catching or has lost its only key is a lock job rather than a new door. Sam Gregory repairs and replaces garage door locks across Sheffield and Rotherham, covering up and over handles and latches, side hinged garage doors and the euro cylinders fitted to newer doors, and he opens garages where the key is lost or the barrel has seized. Every job is quoted on the phone before Sam sets off, with no call out fee and no VAT.
Three kinds of garage door turn up in Sheffield, and the lock on each one behaves differently.
The up and over door is by far the most common in Sheffield, and the lock on it is also the simplest, which is why most garage lock calls end in a part swap rather than a long repair.
Five faults cover nearly every garage lock call out.
| What the lock is doing | What has usually failed | What Sam does |
|---|---|---|
| The key will not turn at all | The barrel has seized, usually from rust and damp | Replaces the barrel, or the whole handle where the body has corroded |
| The handle turns but the door stays shut | A latch rod has come off its clip or bent | Refits or replaces the rods and resets the catches at each side |
| The key turns but the door will not lock | The catches have moved as the frame settled | Realigns the catches so both rods engage |
| The key has snapped in the lock | A worn key forced in a stiff barrel | Extracts the key, then replaces the barrel if it is worn |
| There is no key at all | The only key was lost or never passed on | Opens the door, fits a new handle or barrel and supplies new keys |
Damp is behind most of these. A garage is unheated and often open to the weather at the bottom edge, so a barrel that is never oiled rusts internally long before the handle looks worn from outside.
Sam repairs the lock and the parts the lock drives. The springs, cables, tracks and motors that make a garage door move are a garage door engineer job, and he says so on the phone rather than taking the call out.
In practice the dividing line is easy. If the door opens and closes normally but the key or handle is the problem, it is a locksmith job. If the door is heavy, crooked, stuck part way or the motor has stopped, it is a door engineer job, and the lock is usually fine.
The exception is a door that will not open because the lock has failed while the door is shut, which is a lock job even though the symptom looks like a door fault. Sam opens it, replaces the failed part, and the door works as it did before.
Most garages in Sheffield hold bikes, tools, a freezer and the ladder that lets someone reach a first floor window, which makes the garage worth more to an opportunist than the car that is parked on the drive.
Three cheap improvements make a real difference. The first is a working lock on the garage side door, which is often the weakest door on the whole property and sometimes still has the builder original lock. The second is a hasp and a closed shackle padlock on an up and over door, which adds a second point to force. The third is keeping the internal connecting door into the house locked and treated as an external door, because an attacker who gets into the garage is then out of sight.
Where the garage door carries a euro cylinder, it is open to the same snapping attack as the house, so fitting anti snap cylinders applies there too and costs only the difference in the part.
Garage locks follow the housing stock. The interwar and postwar semis across Sheffield mostly have detached up and over garages at the end of a drive, often with the original handle still fitted, while newer estates in Mosborough, Killamarsh and the newer parts of Rotherham have integral garages with a connecting door into the house and a euro cylinder in the side door.
Sam covers both, and on a detached garage the usual job is a seized barrel after a wet winter, while on an integral garage it is more often the connecting door that needs the better lock.
Prime Locksmiths holds a 5.0 rating on Google from 200+ reviews, and the price given before the job and the absence of a call out fee are two of the points customers raise most often.

I was recently on the receiving end of an attempted burglary where the lock was almost broken in to. Around midnight I was searching for someone to replace my door lock and handle and put on an anti-snap lock. I came across Sam and he responded very promptly, and arranged the earliest appointment to see me. The service was very quick and the quality of the work was excellent. Sam also gave some great advice along the way. Thank you for your help at such short notice.Posted on Google![]()

Excellent. My front door was quite tricky to sort out. Gave me price for work prior to starting and advised me of any extras there may be(there weren't any). Explained what he was doing and why. Went over and above work requested to ensure everything was as it should be. Good price. Prompt work. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience with Sam, who replaced our front door locking system. From the start, he was professional, friendly, and clearly knew his trade inside out. He explained the options in a way that actually made sense, didn’t push anything unnecessary, and helped us choose a solution that felt secure and good value. The work itself was done efficiently and to a really high standard and everything feels solid and works smoothly, which is exactly what you want with something as important as your front door security. He also made sure everything was tidy before leaving, which we really appreciated. What stood out most was how reliable and straightforward he was—turned up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and took pride in doing the job properly. He clearly cares about his work to a high standard and it shines through in how he works. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone needing a locksmith. Honest, skilled, and genuinely helpful. He will be out locksmith moving forward :)

The price depends on the lock, the door type and the time of day. A barrel costs less than a full handle, and the how a garage lock job is priced is explained, including the four things that move the figure.
The barrel has usually seized from rust and damp, which is common on an unheated garage. The barrel or the whole handle is replaced and new keys come with it.
Yes. Sam opens the door, fits a new barrel or handle and supplies new keys in the same visit, so the garage is usable again before he leaves.
No, if the problem is the door rather than the lock. Springs, cables, tracks and motors are a garage door engineer job. If the lock has failed while the door is shut, that is a lock job and Sam opens it.
Yes. Side hinged doors use rim locks, mortice locks or euro cylinders in a handle, with bolts on the passive leaf, and all of those are repaired or replaced.
Yes, and it is often the weakest door on the property. A proper lock on the side door usually matters more than anything fitted to the main garage door.
Yes. Treat it as an external door, because an attacker who gets into the garage is then working out of sight. It should have a lock of the same standard as a back door.
Yes, where the door takes a euro cylinder. It faces the same snapping attack as the house and the upgrade costs only the difference in the part.
Yes. A closed shackle padlock on a solid hasp adds a second point to force, which is a cheap improvement on an older up and over door.
You can, and the lock itself is simple. Where it usually goes wrong is the measurement and the alignment, because a handle that does not match the rod spacing will not pull both catches, and a lock fitted out of line wears out within months.
Most are finished in under an hour, in one visit, because the common handles and barrels are carried on the van.
Yes, for the locks. Workshop and yard door locks are repaired in the same way as a domestic garage, and the commercial lock work page sets out what Sam takes on for business premises. Roller shutters and shutter motors are a shutter engineer job.
Yes. A new barrel or handle comes with its own keys, usually two or three, and extra keys are cut where you need more.
